Romans 1:7
“to all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
What does Romans 1:7 mean?
Paul opens his letter by reminding the Roman church that they belong to God first and foremost, not because of anything they've earned but because they've been chosen and loved. The word "saints" here doesn't mean people who are perfect or unusually holy, but simply people set apart for God's purposes, which includes every believer. When Paul wishes them grace and peace, he's invoking God's unmerited favor and the deep well-being that comes from being right with God, something especially meaningful for a community that likely faced tension both from within and without. This greeting establishes the foundation for everything he'll say afterward: you are beloved, you are called, and God's goodness is yours to receive.
