What does Romans 1:3 mean?

Paul is reminding his Roman readers that Jesus wasn't just a spiritual or divine figure, but a real person with a real family line. By connecting Jesus to King David, Paul is pointing to ancient promises that the Messiah would come from David's descendants, showing that Jesus fulfilled what God's people had long been waiting for. The phrase "according to the flesh" simply means in his human, earthly nature, as opposed to his divine nature. It's Paul's way of saying that the promised deliverer didn't arrive as an abstract idea, but as an actual human being born into history.
