What does Romans 1:23 mean?
Paul is describing what happens when people turn away from recognizing God's true nature and power. Instead of honoring the invisible God whose glory never fades, they create physical idols shaped like humans, animals, or creatures, then worship these made things as if they were divine. It's a kind of spiritual downgrade, trading something eternal and perfect for something temporary and limited. This matters because it reveals a pattern Paul sees throughout human history: when we stop acknowledging the real God, we don't end up with nothing, we end up worshiping lesser things. We might not literally carve statues today, but the principle applies whenever we give our trust and devotion to things that can't ultimately sustain us, whether that's status, relationships, possessions, or our own abilities.
