What does Revelation 3:22 mean?

This closing line appears at the end of each of the seven letters to the churches, and it's Jesus inviting us to actually *listen* to what's being said, not just hear words. "Having an ear" is a way of saying: do you have the capacity and willingness to receive this message? It's a gentle push against spiritual numbness or distraction. The Spirit is speaking directly to the assemblies (the gathered communities of believers) about their real struggles, their growth, their need for faithfulness. He's not shouting from far away but speaking into their actual circumstances. When you read through this letter to Philadelphia or Laodicea, you might recognize your own church community or your own heart in what's described, and that's the point: the Spirit still has something to say to us today about how we're doing.
