What does Revelation 21:1 mean?

John is describing the ultimate renewal of all creation when God's kingdom is fully established. Everything broken and corrupted by sin, including the old patterns of suffering and separation, will be completely remade rather than destroyed. The disappearance of the sea (which in ancient literature often symbolized chaos, danger, and barriers between people) suggests a world where nothing separates us from God or from each other anymore. This vision isn't escape from the physical world but its restoration and perfection, offering hope that our deepest longing for things to be made right isn't naive or wrong, it's the promise God is making to those who trust him.
