What does Revelation 2:15 mean?
The church in Pergamum had a problem: some of its members were following teachings associated with the Nicolaitans, a group that apparently encouraged compromising Christian values by participating in pagan practices and eating food sacrificed to idols. Jesus is saying this isn't a small issue to brush aside—the church has allowed false teaching to take root among them, just as some believers in an earlier church had done. This matters because it touches something we all face: the pressure to fit in with our surroundings, even when it means softening our convictions. The Nicolaitans likely made their path sound reasonable ("Everyone does it," "It's just food," "We can blend in without losing our faith"), but Jesus names it clearly as something the church should confront, not accommodate. He's not saying anyone is beyond redemption, but he is saying that communities of faith have a responsibility to tend carefully to what they're actually believing and practicing, not just what sounds acceptable to the world around them.
