What does Revelation 14:20 mean?
John uses the image of a wine press here as a symbol of God's judgment on evil. When grapes are crushed in a wine press, they release their juice in enormous quantities, and John stretches this picture to its most dramatic extreme: blood flowing so deep it reaches up to a horse's bridle across a distance of roughly 200 miles. The overwhelming scale signals not a literal description but the totality and severity of God's final reckoning against those who have rejected him and caused suffering. This vision comes at the climax of Revelation, in a moment when John is trying to help persecuted early Christians understand that their suffering is not meaningless and that God's justice will ultimately prevail. The strange, intense imagery isn't meant to terrify but to assure them that evil won't have the last word.
