Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six.

What does Revelation 13:18 mean?

This mysterious verse has sparked countless interpretations over centuries, but its core message is simpler than the wild theories suggest. In John's time, numbers often represented things symbolically, and every letter in Hebrew and Greek had a numerical value, so names could be converted to numbers. The "number of a man" likely means this beast represents human power and rebellion against God, falling short of perfection (seven in biblical symbolism) at every level: 6-6-6. Rather than a secret code to decode, this is John's way of saying the beast's power, though it may look impressive to observers, is ultimately limited and incomplete. He's reassuring persecuted Christians that even the most threatening earthly forces remain under God's authority. The invitation to "calculate" isn't a puzzle we need to solve to be spiritually secure, but rather a call to spiritual discernment: recognize where human pride and power oppose God, and remember such opposition has already been judged as insufficient.
