What does Revelation 1:17 mean?

John encounters the risen Jesus in a vision so overwhelming that he collapses in terror, completely undone by the sight of divine glory. Jesus responds not with anger at John's fear, but with tenderness, touching him and speaking words of comfort. In identifying himself as "the first and the last," Jesus claims complete authority over all of time and existence, the one who was before everything and will remain after everything ends. For someone experiencing that kind of paralyzing fear in God's presence, those words are meant to shift everything: you can trust this one, because nothing is beyond his knowledge or control.
