What does Revelation 1:12 mean?

John hears a voice behind him and physically turns around to see who's speaking. What he encounters are seven golden lampstands, which might sound like odd furniture for a vision, but they're actually loaded with meaning. In Revelation, these lampstands represent the seven churches John is about to write messages to, so what looks like a strange detail is really John's way of showing us that this entire vision is about real communities of believers. There's something deeply human in John's response here too. When we hear an overwhelming voice or encounter the holy, our first instinct is often to look, to try to make sense of what's happening through our senses. John does exactly that, and in turning around, he's about to come face to face with the risen Jesus. For many of us in difficult times, this captures that moment when we sense God's presence and turn our attention fully toward it, ready to receive whatever message comes next.
