Psalms 88:6
“You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.”
What does Psalms 88:6 mean?
The psalmist is describing the crushing weight of depression or despair in raw, physical language. He feels abandoned, thrust into the deepest darkness where God's presence seems most distant. Rather than pretending everything is fine, he's naming the actual depth of his pain to God, which is often the only honest place to start when we're suffering. This psalm doesn't offer quick comfort, but it does offer something equally valuable: permission to bring our darkest feelings into prayer without pretending or performing.
