Psalms 83:17
“Let them be disappointed and dismayed forever. Yes, let them be confounded and perish;”
What does Psalms 83:17 mean?
The psalmist is calling out for God's judgment against enemies who have united to destroy Israel. This isn't a casual wish, but a prayer born from real danger and desperation, where the people facing attack are asking God to make sure their attackers fail completely and never try again. Reading this in the context of genuine threat helps us understand it's not about petty revenge. When someone we love is under attack, we naturally pray for protection and for the threat to end decisively. The psalmist wants enemies to abandon their plans permanently ("disappointed and dismayed forever") and face real consequences for their aggression. It's a prayer for God to act decisively so peace can finally come. This kind of psalm can be hard for us today, but it reminds us that it's okay to bring our fear and our anger about injustice directly to God. We don't have to pretend we're fine when we're not. At the same time, God's mercy ultimately extends to all people, even enemies, which is why we read these raw prayers alongside Jesus's call to forgive and love those who oppose us.
