Psalms 79:2
“They have given the dead bodies of your servants to be food for the birds of the sky, the flesh of your saints to the animals of the earth.”
What does Psalms 79:2 mean?
This is a raw cry of pain from someone watching their community suffer devastating loss, possibly during invasion or persecution. The psalmist is describing not just death, but the ultimate indignity: bodies left unburied and desecrated, which would have been deeply shameful in ancient culture where proper burial mattered enormously for dignity and honor. By laying this brutal image before God, the psalmist isn't being disrespectful, but rather doing what many of the psalms do: bringing the full weight of suffering and injustice into prayer without softening it. The point is to say, "God, look at what's happening to your people, look at how far things have fallen." It's honest grief mixed with an appeal for God's attention and intervention, which is exactly what the following verses ask for.
