What does Psalms 78:21 mean?

When God's people kept breaking faith with him despite his faithfulness—complaining, doubting, turning to idols—his patience eventually reached a limit. This wasn't the anger of someone losing control, but the response of a loving parent who must finally address persistent rebellion that's harming their child. The "fire" here represents God's judgment through natural consequences and discipline meant to wake them up and turn them back toward him. Even in anger, this remains part of God's larger story of calling his people back to himself, not abandoning them forever.
