What does Psalms 71:9 mean?
The psalmist is asking God not to abandon him as he grows older and weaker, when he becomes more vulnerable and dependent. This is a deeply human prayer, spoken by someone who fears being left alone precisely when he needs help most. The passage recognizes a real anxiety many of us face: that our worth or usefulness might diminish with age, and that people (or even God) might drift away when we're no longer strong or productive. What makes this beautiful is that the psalmist brings this fear directly to God rather than hiding it, trusting that God's care isn't based on what we can do or how capable we are, but on who we are as his people.
