Psalms 69:12
“Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.”
What does Psalms 69:12 mean?
When the psalmist says people sitting in the gate are talking about him, he's describing public humiliation in his own time, when city gates were where important people gathered and news spread. He feels reduced to a laughingstock, even mocked by people at the lowest rungs of society (the drunkards). This is someone experiencing not just private suffering but the particular sting of being a public joke. Yet he's honest about it rather than pretending the shame doesn't exist. That raw acknowledgment, even in a moment of feeling utterly degraded, somehow becomes a kind of prayer. Many people find strength in knowing that even the psalms don't ask us to hide our deepest humiliations from God.
