Psalms 69:1
“Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck!”
What does Psalms 69:1 mean?
The psalmist is drowning, and not necessarily in literal water. This is the language of desperation when overwhelming trouble surrounds you completely, when you're about to go under and can barely keep your head above the surface. We use similar language today when we say we're "in over our heads" or "drowning in debt." What makes this opening so powerful is its raw honesty. The psalmist doesn't pretend to have it figured out or handle things gracefully. Instead, he runs straight to God with the urgent plea of someone in real crisis, naming exactly how dire things feel. If you've ever been there, you know that sometimes the most honest prayer is simply "Help me, I'm sinking."
