Psalms 68:5
“A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.”
What does Psalms 68:5 mean?
God positions himself as the protector of those who are most vulnerable and alone, the ones with no one else to turn to. In ancient times, orphans and widows had almost no social safety net and were easily exploited, so calling God their father and defender spoke directly to their deepest need for someone powerful enough to keep them safe. This tells us that God's character is defined partly by how he cares for the overlooked and hurting, and it invites us to bring our loneliness and helplessness to him without shame.
