Psalms 66:10
“For you, God, have tested us. You have refined us, as silver is refined.”
What does Psalms 66:10 mean?
God is comparing the difficulty we go through to the process a metalsmith uses to purify silver. When silver is heated in fire, impurities rise to the surface and burn away, leaving behind something more valuable and beautiful. The psalmist is saying that our hardships aren't meaningless suffering, but rather a refining process where God is working to strengthen our character and faith. It's an honest acknowledgment that trials are real and uncomfortable, while also trusting that something good and true is being developed in us through them. This doesn't explain away pain, but it offers perspective: God isn't punishing you arbitrarily, but inviting you to become more genuinely yourself.
