Psalms 55:23
“But you, God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.”
What does Psalms 55:23 mean?
The psalmist is pouring out his heart about people who have betrayed and hunted him, and here he declares his confidence that God sees their violence and deception and will hold them accountable. He's not saying he'll take revenge himself, but rather that he's placing his faith in God's justice, trusting that those who live by harm and lies won't prosper or enjoy long lives. Even while acknowledging the real danger and hurt around him, he anchors himself in something stronger: belief that God is aware, God cares, and God's moral order ultimately matters more than the temporary power of wicked people. This can comfort us when we're hurt by others' betrayal or cruelty. We don't have to exhaust ourselves seeking revenge or wondering if wrongdoing will go unnoticed, because we're invited to trust that God's eyes are open to injustice, and our job is simply to turn our worry into prayer and hold onto hope in him.
