What does Psalms 51:7 mean?
The psalmist is asking God to cleanse him from deep guilt and shame, using imagery from ancient Jewish purification rituals. Hyssop was an herb used in ceremonial washings to restore people to right standing with God, so mentioning it here shows David's longing for complete spiritual restoration, not just surface improvement.
