For you will bless the righteous. Yahweh, you will surround him with favor as with a shield.

What does Psalms 5:12 mean?

The psalmist is offering comfort to those who try to live faithfully—assuring them that God actively protects and blesses people who walk in integrity. Rather than blessing being distant or occasional, the image of a shield suggests God's favor completely surrounds and guards us, close and constant. This doesn't mean righteous people never face difficulty, but rather that God's presence and goodness are their defensive wall through whatever comes. It's an invitation to trust that choosing faithfulness matters because God notices and actively cares for those who seek to follow him.
