Psalms 44:1
“We have heard with our ears, God; our fathers have told us, what work you did in their days, in the days of old.”
What does Psalms 44:1 mean?
This psalm opens with the community remembering stories passed down through generations, stories about what God had done for their ancestors. The speaker is saying, "We didn't just read this somewhere, we heard it directly from our fathers, who witnessed God's faithfulness firsthand." There's something powerful in that chain of testimony, each generation passing along to the next what they've experienced of God's presence and provision. It sets the stage for what follows, where the psalmist will wrestle with a painful question: if God did these mighty things before, why does it feel like he's abandoned us now?
