Psalms 42:7
“Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have swept over me.”
What does Psalms 42:7 mean?
The psalmist is describing overwhelming grief using the language of drowning. One deep place in the ocean is calling out to another as waterfalls crash down, and the waves keep coming, one after another, until the speaker feels completely submerged by sorrow. What makes this image so powerful is that it captures something true about suffering: when you're in deep pain, it can feel like one wave of difficulty crashes into another without mercy, as if the depths themselves are speaking to you about your condition. The psalmist isn't trying to fix or minimize this feeling. Instead, by putting it into such vivid, physical language, they're saying that their experience of despair is real and valid, and it matters.
