Psalms 40:6
“Sacrifice and offering you didn’t desire. You have opened my ears. You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.”
What does Psalms 40:6 mean?
The psalmist is saying that God cares far more about our willingness to listen and obey than about religious rituals performed without genuine hearts. In the Old Testament world, sacrifices were central to worship, but this passage suggests they meant little to God when offered by people who weren't truly connected to him spiritually. "Opening the ears" refers to being receptive, attentive, and ready to hear God's voice and follow his ways. The writer is expressing something deeply countercultural for his time: that authentic relationship with God—marked by a listening heart and genuine commitment—matters infinitely more than going through the motions of religious practice.
