What does Psalms 4:1 mean?
The writer of this psalm is in real trouble and turning to God as the only one who can help. He's appealing to God based on God's nature as righteous and just, trusting that such a God would care about his suffering and respond. The prayer asks for three things: to be heard, to find relief from whatever is pressing hard on him, and to receive mercy. What makes this psalm so honest is that it doesn't pretend everything is fine or that the person praying has all the answers. It's simply a cry from someone who needs God's attention and help, which is something many of us understand in our own seasons of strain or confusion.
