What does Psalms 37:36 mean?

The psalmist is reflecting on how quickly the wicked person he once envied simply vanished from the earth. He looked for evidence of that person's power or prosperity, and it was gone, as if it had never really mattered at all. This captures something true about how temporary injustice can feel: the person who seemed so impressive and wrongly successful one moment can disappear the next, taking their ill-gotten gains with them. It's a reminder that what looks permanent and powerful from our limited viewpoint often turns out to be fragile, while what's built on integrity endures.
