“Let them be disappointed and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity. Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me.”
What does Psalms 35:26 mean?
When someone is going through real suffering, it can feel unbearable to watch others enjoy your pain or use it as an opportunity to put you down. The psalmist is expressing a deeply human desire here: that those who celebrate your downfall or build themselves up by tearing you down would eventually face the consequences of their cruelty. He's asking God to let their own schemes backfire, to let shame catch up with them the way it's caught up with him. This isn't primarily about revenge in the sense of personal retaliation. It's about trusting that God sees injustice and that genuine accountability exists in the world, even when you're too worn down to fight back yourself. The prayer acknowledges that sometimes all we can do is bring our hurt and anger to God and ask him to make things right, because we lack the strength or wisdom to do it ourselves.
