I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for Yahweh sustains me.

What does Psalms 3:5 mean?

This beautiful moment captures what it feels like to rest in God's care during trouble. The psalmist—likely David, fleeing from enemies—describes a simple but profound peace: he was able to actually sleep despite his circumstances, and he woke knowing that God had been holding him through the night. There's something deeply reassuring in the ordinariness of it. He didn't need dramatic miracles or immediate solutions; he found comfort in trusting that God was present and faithful while he slept, unable to control anything. That same sustaining presence is available to us when anxiety keeps us awake or fear threatens to overwhelm us.
