What does Psalms 26:6 mean?
The psalmist is expressing a desire to approach God's presence with a clean conscience and pure motives. In ancient temple worship, priests would literally wash their hands before serving at the altar as both a physical and spiritual preparation, so this image would have been deeply meaningful to people in that context. The prayer captures something many of us recognize: that longing to come before God without the weight of hidden guilt or compromised intentions, wanting to be genuinely honest rather than performing righteousness we don't feel.
