Psalms 20:7
“Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we trust the name of Yahweh our God.”
What does Psalms 20:7 mean?
The psalmist contrasts two ways of finding security: relying on military power and weaponry versus trusting in God's character and promises. Chariots and horses represented the cutting-edge military strength of the ancient world, so this verse speaks to whatever feels most solid and dependable in our own time—whether that's money, status, our own strength, or other people's approval. What makes this statement powerful is the choice it presents. The psalm isn't denying that these other things exist or even that they can help; it's simply saying that ultimate trust belongs elsewhere. When we anchor ourselves to God's name (which means his proven nature and faithfulness), we're choosing a foundation that doesn't shift with circumstances. That doesn't mean hardship won't come, but it means we're not fundamentally vulnerable to every change in our situation.
