“He who sits in the heavens will laugh. The Lord will have them in derision.”
What does Psalms 2:4 mean?
God laughing at human defiance might sound harsh at first, but it's actually comforting. The psalmist is reassuring us that earthly powers plotting against God's kingdom are ultimately powerless, like children making plans against an adult. That laughter isn't cruel mockery, but rather God's calm confidence that no scheme against his purposes will ultimately succeed. In the midst of real threats and real fear, the writer reminds us that from God's eternal perspective, he already knows how this story ends, and it ends well.
