What does Psalms 17:5 mean?

The psalmist is expressing confidence that he has stayed true to God's direction, even when circumstances have been difficult or tempting. This isn't arrogance, but rather a sense of relief and gratitude that despite challenges, he hasn't abandoned his commitment or lost his footing spiritually. There's comfort in this for anyone who feels like they're barely holding on. Sometimes just staying the course, without slipping backward into old patterns or giving up on faith, is itself an accomplishment worth acknowledging. The psalmist recognizes that remaining steady on God's path requires active faithfulness, and he's grateful for the grace that has kept him there.
