What does Psalms 142:5 mean?

The psalmist is in distress, calling out to God with raw honesty, and in that moment of crying out, something shifts: he remembers who God actually is. "You are my refuge" means God is the safe place when everything else feels unsafe, the one he can run to without pretense or fear of rejection. "My portion in the land of the living" is a beautiful way of saying that God is what makes life worth living right now, in this present moment, not just in some distant future. Even while still hurting and uncertain, the psalmist is anchoring himself in the one solid thing he knows: God's presence and protection matter more than whatever circumstances are crushing him.
