What does Psalms 139:4 mean?

Before the psalmist even speaks, God already knows what will come out of his mouth. This isn't meant to feel invasive, but rather deeply comforting. The writer is expressing wonder at how thoroughly God understands him, right down to the thoughts and words that haven't even been formed yet. There's real relief in this truth for people carrying heavy things. You don't have to rehearse your prayers perfectly or find exactly the right words, because God grasps what you're trying to say even when you're stumbling through it. He knows your heart before your lips do.
