What does Psalms 138:6 mean?

God's greatness doesn't make him distant from those who are struggling or feel small. The psalmist is saying that the Lord actively cares for and pays attention to people who are humble and know their need for him. Meanwhile, those who are proud and self-sufficient don't experience that same closeness, not because God abandons them, but because pride creates distance, like standing far away from someone reaching out to help. This is encouraging news if you're going through something hard, feeling overlooked, or aware of your own limitations, because it tells you that God's attention turns toward exactly that kind of openness.
