What does Psalms 137:4 mean?
The psalmist asks this question while in exile in Babylon, far from Jerusalem and the temple where God's people traditionally worshipped. It captures the deep ache of displacement, when your surroundings feel so wrong that even praise feels impossible. The real question isn't really about music—it's about whether faith and joy can survive when everything familiar is gone. Many people recognize themselves in this question during their own hard seasons: grief, loss, illness, or being far from home. What the psalmist discovers over the course of the psalm is that this very longing becomes a kind of song itself, an honest cry that doesn't pretend everything is okay.
