Psalms 135:18
“Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.”
What does Psalms 135:18 mean?
The psalmist is pointing out a spiritual reality: when we devote ourselves to things that are lifeless or empty, we become like them in our inner lives. If you pour your trust into something that can't respond, can't grow, and can't love you back, you gradually lose those capacities in yourself. Your heart becomes as unmoved and unchanging as the object of your devotion. This applies whether we're talking about carved idols (the original context) or anything else we might place ultimate faith in: money, status, approval, or control. The invitation underneath is to redirect that trust toward something genuinely alive, something that can transform and meet us.
