What does Psalms 13:1 mean?

The psalmist is crying out in raw pain, feeling abandoned by God during what seems like an endless struggle. That question "How long?" echoes the desperation we sometimes feel when prayers seem unanswered and God feels distant or silent. The image of God's face being hidden captures something true about spiritual loneliness: it's not that God has stopped existing, but that the sense of his presence has vanished, and that absence can feel unbearable. What makes this psalm beautiful is that the writer brings this honest anguish directly to God rather than keeping it bottled up—which itself is an act of faith, because you only cry out to someone you believe might still listen.
