What does Psalms 129:1 mean?

This is the opening of a psalm that reflects on the long history of suffering the nation of Israel has endured. The speaker is inviting the whole community to join in acknowledging their collective pain, not to dwell in it but to speak it aloud together. There's something powerful in this invitation to simply say "yes, we have suffered" without rushing past it toward comfort. When we're going through hard seasons, sometimes we need permission to name what we've experienced before we can move forward, and this psalm gives us that permission in community.
