Psalms 121:6
“The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.”
What does Psalms 121:6 mean?
This reassurance comes after the psalmist has already declared that God is the keeper who never sleeps, watching over you constantly. The imagery speaks to protection in all seasons and circumstances, day and night, using the sun and moon as symbols of life's different phases and challenges. In the ancient world, people genuinely feared excessive sun exposure and believed the moon held mysterious power over health and sanity. Rather than dismiss these concerns, the psalm addresses them directly, saying God's care covers even what frightens us most. Today, we might translate this as protection through our ordinary routines, our vulnerable times, and the things that make us anxious, whether we can name them clearly or not. The deeper comfort is this: you're not abandoned to chance or danger. Whatever wears on you, whatever feels threatening, falls under God's watchful care.
