What does Psalms 119:18 mean?

The psalm writer is asking God to help them understand Scripture in a deeper way, to perceive truths they might otherwise miss. "Opening the eyes" is a beautiful picture of spiritual insight—not that the words are hard to read, but that truly grasping what they mean requires help beyond ourselves. This is especially meaningful if you've ever read a passage dozens of times only to suddenly see something new in it that changes how you live. The longing here feels universal: we want to understand things that matter most to us. Whether you're new to the Bible or have studied it for years, this prayer acknowledges that real understanding is a gift, not just the result of effort or intelligence. It's an invitation to approach Scripture with humility and openness, expecting to discover something that will transform how you see God and your life.
