“I have gone astray like a lost sheep. Seek your servant, for I don’t forget your commandments.”
What does Psalms 119:176 mean?
The psalmist is admitting something we all recognize in ourselves: sometimes we wander away from what we know is right, despite genuinely wanting to follow God's way. The image of a lost sheep captures how easy it is to drift, not always through rebellion but sometimes just through carelessness or confusion. What makes this verse tender is the second part. Even while confessing to being lost, the speaker isn't saying "I've given up on your commands." Instead, they're asking God to seek them out, the way a shepherd searches for a stray animal. There's both humility (acknowledging lostness) and faith (trusting that God will come looking) in the same breath. If you're feeling far from where you want to be spiritually, this verse says something important: admitting you've strayed isn't the end of the story. It's actually the beginning of inviting God to find you.
