Psalms 119:118
βYou reject all those who stray from your statutes, for their deceit is in vain.β
What does Psalms 119:118 mean?
When we drift away from God's ways, we create distance from Him, and this verse tells us plainly that God doesn't endorse that direction. The second part offers something like comfort: all the scheming and shortcuts people use to justify their wandering ultimately amount to nothing. There's a realism here that acknowledges people do rebel against God's guidance, but it also suggests their efforts to make those choices seem okay or worth it are ultimately hollow. For someone struggling with guilt or feeling far from God, this can be both a wake-up call and a strange reassurance that pretending doesn't change reality.
