What does Psalms 118:18 mean?
When we're in pain or facing serious hardship, it's natural to wonder if God has abandoned us. The psalmist knew that feeling intimately, having endured severe suffering, yet he holds onto a crucial distinction: punishment and destruction are not the same thing. God's discipline, however painful it feels in the moment, is not the same as being utterly cast away or destroyed. There's a boundary that love won't cross, even when correction is necessary. This becomes a lifeline for anyone suffering through consequences or trials: yes, the pain is real and sometimes deserved, but it doesn't mean you're beyond reach or that God has given up on you.
