Psalms 115:8
“Those who make them will be like them; yes, everyone who trusts in them.”
What does Psalms 115:8 mean?
When we pour our energy and devotion into something false, we gradually become shaped by it. The psalmist is talking about people who craft idols and then worship them, and he's pointing out something psychologically true: we become like what we trust. If you trust in wealth to save you, you become anxious and grasping. If you trust in your own strength alone, you become isolated and brittle. But if you trust in the living God, you begin to take on qualities of mercy, resilience, and peace. This applies whether we're literally bowing to carved statues or just giving our hearts to things that can't actually sustain us. The direction of our worship shapes who we're becoming.
