Psalms 115:6
“They have ears, but they don’t hear. They have noses, but they don’t smell.”
What does Psalms 115:6 mean?
This psalm is describing the uselessness of idols, those carved statues that people were bowing down to in ancient times. The psalmist is making a pointed observation: these objects might look like they have all the right parts, but they're completely lifeless and unable to do anything. They can't perceive the world around them, they can't help anyone who prays to them, they're just empty forms. It's a gentle but firm reminder that putting our trust in things that have no real power or presence is pointless, and that our faith works so much better when it's directed toward something (or someone) actually alive and responsive.
