Psalms 115:2
“Why should the nations say, “Where is their God, now?””
What does Psalms 115:2 mean?
The psalmist is voicing a painful question that arises when God's people are suffering or oppressed, when their enemies see them struggling and wonder aloud where their God has gone. It's the kind of taunt that cuts deepest because it echoes the doubts we ourselves might feel in dark moments: if God is really there and really powerful, why aren't things different right now? Rather than dismissing this as faithless worry, the psalm holds the question honestly before God. The psalmist knows that how believers are treated reflects on God's reputation in the world, which is exactly why the next verses turn to declarations of God's character and faithfulness. The point isn't that such doubts are wrong to voice, but that they drive us to remember who God actually is, beyond our current circumstances.
