Psalms 109:10
“Let his children be wandering beggars. Let them be sought from their ruins.”
What does Psalms 109:10 mean?
This is one of the harshest prayers in the entire Bible, part of a longer lament where the psalmist calls down judgment on someone who has betrayed and attacked him. The psalmist is asking God to let his enemy's children suffer poverty and displacement as consequences for the wrongs done to him. It's important to know that imprecatory psalms like this one reflect raw human pain and anger brought honestly to God, rather than instructions for how we should act. The psalmist isn't hiding his rage or pretending to be fine, but instead pours out his deepest wounds in prayer. Many people find these prayers oddly comforting because they give permission to bring our darkest feelings before God rather than stuffing them down. At the same time, Jesus later teaches us to pray for those who harm us, suggesting that honest lament can eventually lead us toward forgiveness and healing.
