What does Psalms 104:5 mean?

God established the earth with such intentionality and care that it's secure and stable, not shakily balanced or temporary. The image here is of someone building something to last, creating a foundation that won't slip or crumble. For ancient people who experienced earthquakes and the mystery of how the world stayed in place, this would have been deeply reassuring, a reminder that existence itself rests on divine permanence. Today, we might read this as comfort that God has set things in order with purpose, and that our world and lives aren't haphazardly floating but held by something reliable.
